MRI for TMJs (Procedures) - Video Lesson
Hey everyone. Welcome to today's lesson on the MRI of the temporomandibular joints. In this lesson, we will discuss patient setup and slice positioning, indications for this exam, MRI anatomy, and discuss some imaging challenges associated with this study. Let's get started. An MRI of the temporomandibular joint or TMJ is used to assess the condyle of the mandible, mandibular fossa, the fibrocartilaginous articular disc, and the ligaments and muscles of jaw movement. Common indications include pain near the ear with jaw movements, clicking sounds when opening or closing the jaw, chewing difficulty, headaches, and suspected articular disc displacement. Patients needing a TMJ study will be positioned on the MR table head first supine. A wedge cushion should be placed under the knees to aid in patient comfort and the call ball provided to the patient to use
