MRI for Specialized Studies - Spectroscopy (Procedures) - Video Lesson
Hey, everyone. Welcome to today's lesson on spectroscopy studies in MRI. In this lesson, we will discuss the principles behind spectroscopy, the patient setup and protocol, and analyzing the spectrograph produced. Let's get started. Spectroscopy studies are based on the principle of chemical shift to provide specific information about the chemical makeup of tissues of the body. Different chemicals or metabolites have different processional frequencies at which they resonate. Therefore, they can be displayed as a spectrum and isolated by their frequency. This information can be useful for patients with malignant tumors to determine the metabolic activity of the lesion. Let's look at the patient setup for this exam. Patients are positioned supine on the MRI table with a wedge cushion placed under the knees to aid in patient comfort. The call ball should be given to the patient to use if they need to contact the technologist. Patients
