This lesson looks at medications aimed at treating the urinary system, specifically diuretics, the common disorders for which they are used, and essential information about administering diuretics. Let's begin with a quick review of the basic anatomy of the urinary system. The urinary system begins with the kidneys, which filter waste from the blood to produce urine. Ureters then transport urine from the kidneys to the bladder where it is stored until it is excreted through the urethra, which is the channel through which urine is discharged from the body. This system performs three vital functions in its critical role of maintaining the body's internal environment. These three functions are excretion of waste products.
