Hey, everybody. Welcome to today's lesson on instrumentation in MRI. This lesson focuses on the radio frequency or RF coils, including the different types of RF coils. RF coils are vital to MRI because without them, there would be no magnetic resonance, thus no signal to detect. RF receive coils can be divided into two categories, surface coils and volume coils. Surface coils are small coils placed close to the body part being imaged. They provide a high signal to noise ratio, but over a limited field of view. They are used for imaging tissues on or near the surface of the patient's body.
