Hey, everybody. Welcome to today's lesson in instrumentation in MRI. This lesson focuses on the gradient system, including the structure, functionality, and importance of gradient coils. It is important to understand that without gradient coils, we would not be able to localize the MR signal within the patient's body. Let's get started. Gradient coils are cylindrical electromagnets within the MRI scanner responsible for creating magnetic field gradients. Gradient coils consist of either thin metallic strips applied in a fingerprint pattern to a cylinder or copper sheets with windings etched into the surface in a fingerprint pattern that are then wrapped around a cylinder. These designs help in reducing eddy currents, which are loops of current that can produce competing magnetic fields.
