Abdomen Sonography: IVC and Tributaries - Video Lesson
Hey everybody, welcome back to this lesson in our abdominal sonography course. In this lesson, we'll explore the inferior vena cava or IVC, its anatomy, major tributaries, and how it relates to nearby organs and vessels. We'll cover what the IVC looks like on ultrasound, how it functions in venous return to the heart, and how to recognize its normal Doppler waveforms. We'll also look at how respiration and cardiac activity affect the IVC's diameter and flow patterns. All of these are key to interpreting abdominal venous circulation accurately. Evaluating the IVC can also provide useful information about a patient's volume status or right heart function, which is especially valuable in emergency or critical care settings. The IVC is formed by the junction of the right and left common iliac veins at about the level of L5. From there, it ascends along the right side of the vertebral column, staying to the right of the aorta and passes
