In this lesson, we will discuss patient setup and slice positioning, indications for this exam, protocol sequences, and discuss some imaging challenges associated with this study. Let's get started. An MRI of the chest can be used to evaluate structures of the thorax to include the lungs, heart, mediastinum, and chest wall. It is typically used when additional information is needed due to findings on other imaging studies. Some common indications for this study include mediastinal masses or tumors, lymphoadenopathy, muscle tears, infections, congenital abnormalities, cancer staging, or trauma.
