This lesson is on CT scanning modes. CT actually has three distinct scanning acquisition modes. Axial helical and volume. The resulting images are going to look virtually identical, but the scanning processes are very different. Let's start by looking at axial scanning. Axial scanning is the oldest mode of CT scanning, but it does continue to be valuable today for numerous protocols. Axial scanning is also called slice by slice or step and shoot, or sometimes it's called the sequential scanning mode. And that's because the data is collected one section at a time. When the scan is initiated, the tube and the detectors rotate around the patient and acquire the first section of data. Now next, the patient table slides forward, and the next section is acquired. This continues until all of the anatomy is covered. The
