We know that exposure to ionizing radiation causes biological harm, but how exactly does that happen? In this lesson, we're discussing the molecular processes taking place that cause biological harm within cells and tissues. It all starts with ionization. Ionization is the process through which radiation interacts with orbital electrons. Causing the electrons to be ejected out of the atom. The immediate result of this interaction is a free electron. Which is negatively charged and a positively charged atom. These charged particles are called ions.
