Magnetic Shielding - Video Lesson

Hey, everybody. Welcome to today's lesson on instrumentation in MRI. This lesson focuses on MRI magnetic shielding. Magnetic shielding in MRI is an important safety precaution, and understanding these concepts will allow you to ensure the safety of your patient during an MRI scan. The magnetic field generated by the MRI scanner is extremely powerful, and it attracts ferromagnetic objects to it with a force thirty thousand to sixty thousand times greater than the Earth's magnetic force. The magnetic field may extend outside of the scanner. The magnetic field that extends outside the main body of an MRI scanner is called the fringe field. In a room with no shielding, the fringe field can even extend outside of the room itself, potentially damaging equipment located in the imaging department and potentially harming people around the MRI room.
