Let's begin with a quick review of the spleen's anatomy. The spleen is an intraperitoneal organ located in the left upper quadrant, tucked beneath the diaphragm and protected in part by the lower ribs. It lies posterior and lateral to the stomach and anterior to the left kidney. Sonographically, the spleen has a homogeneous, medium level echotexture that is slightly more echogenic than the liver in most individuals.
