Abdomen Sonography: Joints Pathologies and Abnormalities - Video Lesson

Hi, and welcome back to our abdominal extended series. Today, we'll talk about how the sonographic evaluation of joints allows real time assessment of soft tissue, cartilage, and fluid structures that are not well seen on radiography. Since ultrasound imaging is dynamic, this allows for visualization of tendons, ligaments, and synovial tissue during movement. This is an advantage over static imaging. Ultrasound is particularly useful for evaluating the shoulder, knee, elbow, wrist, hip, and ankle because it can capture subtle pathologic changes around the joint capsule and surrounding soft tissues. Before identifying pathology, it is essential to understand normal joint anatomy on ultrasound. The bony cortex appears as a bright, continuous echogenic line with posterior acoustic shadowing.
