This lesson discusses the difference between scored and unscored tablets, explores time released medications, examines special coatings on tablets, and discusses appropriate handling and administration techniques. Let's get started. Scored tablets have a line or indentation across their surface, which makes them easy to split into different doses. This allows for more flexibility in dosing, which helps health care providers give patients more individualized care. For instance, a patient requiring a half a dose of a medication can simply split a scored tablet. Unscored tablets do not have a line or indentation and are intended to be swallowed whole. These unscored tablets may be accompanied by explicit instructions to not crush or chew them as splitting, crushing, or chewing an unscored tablet could impact how the medication is absorbed and distributed. For example, crushing hydrocodone
