Upper GI Series: Overhead Positioning - Video Lesson

Welcome back everybody to our video series on fluoroscopy procedures. This video will focus on positioning for overhead radiographs for an upper gastrointestinal or upper GI Before we begin, we need to discuss how body habitus impacts positioning. The type of body habitus determines the location of the gastrointestinal organs in the abdominal cavity, understanding the position and shape of the stomach and duodenal bulge is important for upper GI imaging. Hyposthenic patients are characterized by a massive body build, broad chest, short lungs and a high diaphragm. The stomach is high in the abdomen and transverse extending away from the midline of the body. The duodenal bulb is approximately at the level of t eleven or t twelve. Sthenic patients are characterized by an athletic average build with a slightly broad chest and a slightly high abdomen.
