You understand that most CT images are viewed one slice at a time as two dimensional images, but there is sometimes a value in rendering the CT images into three-dimensional images. And that's the topic of this lesson, three-dimensional rendering in CT. One form of three-dimensional rendering is called the shaded surface display shaded surface display or SSD, is a form of three d rendering, and it does exactly what the name implies. It's a digital imaging technique that creates a three d view of just the surface of the imaged anatomy. It only projects one tissue at a time and it only uses about ten percent of the image data. The main advantage of shaded surface display is that the surface of the structures can be viewed without needing to render the entire data sets. This means that processing and viewing can happen rapidly.
