Hey everybody. Welcome to today's lesson on contrast in MRI. This lesson focuses on a specialized method of weighting called diffusion weighted imaging or DWI. This lesson will explain diffusion and how it can be used to maximize or minimize diffusion contrast, as well as identify situations in which DWI is used. Let's get started. Diffusion weighted imaging or DWI is a specialized type of MRI weighting that uses the rate of diffusion to create contrast in the MRI image. Diffusion describes the movement of molecules across tissues. In the context of DWI, we are particularly interested in the diffusion of water molecules within the tissue.
